Modular Design Supports Multiple Mix Positions
When Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church (SCBC) Technical Director James Chan selected Novita Techne Limited as an A/V equipment consultant, Novita’s Christian Bechard recommended a Pro16 Aviom digital snake for the church’s new sanctuary.
Bechard chose Aviom and Pro16 because its flexible architecture allowed him to design a complex system for a reasonable cost that could easily be integrated with the church’s Yamaha console. Bechard says, “The client required ease of use, which the Aviom system provides with familiar patchbay style I/O interfaces. I also needed to accommodate the future expansion of the monitoring system, which can easily be accomplished by adding more Personal Mixers.” For Chan, a digital snake would simplify installation, protect against EMI, allow for easy expandability, and save money.
SCBC’s facility also has a chapel and a gym that needed to be integrated, and the system design supports five different mix locations. The modular components of the Aviom digital snake allow it to meet the demands of different events and services at the church.
System Bridge Simplifies Snake Wiring
In the main sanctuary at SCBC, two AN-16/i-M Mic Input Modules on stage send 32 channels to the Yamaha LS9-32 through two AN-16/o Output Modules that are located at front of house. Also at front of house, an Aviom16/o-Y1 A-Net Card installed in the console sends 16 returns to stage. At both stage and front of house, an AN-16SBR System Bridge combines three A-Net streams, putting the 32x16 snake on a single Cat-6 cable.

Project Manager David VanVeldhuisen from Westbury National Show Systems worked with Novita and SCBC to install the Aviom gear. For him the ease of terminating the Cat-6 cable simplified the installation. Chan adds that the use of Cat-6 makes the system more versatile. “All we needed was one Cat-6 cable,” he says, “and I’ve got all the expandability I need for the foreseeable future. Not to mention the cost savings of not needing the extra copper cables.”
