Rick Camp is a well-known and successful front-of-house, broadcast, and recording engineer known in the music industry for his work with artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Tracy Chapman, The Temptations, Madonna, Dr. Dre, Toni Braxton, and many more. Over the past few years, Camp has been touring with J-Lo as her front-of-house engineer.

Also within the past couple of years, Camp has decided to share what he’s learned over the years with those getting started in the industry. Camp recently opened a school in Las Vegas to offer semi-private engineering education for those interested in a career as a front-of-house live audio engineer, broadcast engineer, live sound engineer, monitor engineer, or systems engineer. When he is not on the road, Camp is busy teaching others the art of live engineering in his Master Mix Live™ program. The Master Mix Live location is also a recording studio and sound stage available for booking. Included in the mix of gear that Camp is using in his Las Vegas studio, stage, and teaching space is a new Aviom A360 personal mixing system.

Camp’s Master Mix Live Engineering Program is unique. It is a small program that accepts only eight students at a time, so students get the opportunity to have hundreds of hours of hands-on console time throughout the five month course. And each student has the opportunity to work personally with Camp.

Camp’s decision to integrate an Aviom personal mixing system into the Master Mix Live space was twofold. One of the courses included in the Master Mix Live program focuses on monitor mixing. In this course, students explore various methods of monitor mixing—everything from using wedges to in-ear monitors and personal mixers. Camp also uses the A360s in his recording studio to provide artists’ individual headphone mixes, and artists have the option to use them on the sound stage.

“I think that students find it easier to let musicians dial in their own monitor mixes, but for me  in the studio, the personal mixers are invaluable when trying to please performers who want their headphone mix changed every eight bars for one reason or another to accommodate the passage they are playing or singing,” explains Camp.

Camp’s studio includes eight A360 Personal Mixers, an AN-16/i v.2 Input Module, and a D800 A-Net Distributor. According to Camp, “The A360 is hands down the best sounding and most flexible personal mixer I’ve seen or used to date.”

The next Master Mix Live session begins on September 22 and runs through February of 2015. Visit the www.mastermixlive.com or call VP of admissions, Jay King, at 702-577-3479 if you are interested in enrolling.
